Beginning of May, a few weeks ago
“I'm dead, sir!” declared the young policewoman of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, between two fits of coughing. I just...I just swallowed a lethal dose of anthrax!”
“What did you say, Agent Vale? Repeat! Damn it!”
“Suther trapped me!” she said, coughing. “A handful right into my face!”
Instead of showing at least a hint of empathy, the voice from the speaker was sarcastic, “Agent Vale, you usually have a few minutes before you die from a lethal dose of anthrax. Use that opportunity to complete your mission.”
For the past two months, Kristen Vale had been monitoring the comings and goings of Rodger Suther, one of the staff cleaning the offices of federal ministers in the Place du Centre. She had gotten herself hired, as one of the group of janitors working for Public Works, to keep close without arousing suspicion.

Kristen Vale's department of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police had been put on alert following anthrax threats in federal government offices in Ottawa, Toronto and Halifax, throughout the year.
Anthrax had become a popular tool of terror in the hands of hoaxers and would-be terrorists going back as far as the aftermath of September 11, 2001. At the time, the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) had investigated letters containing anthrax sent to Boca Raton, Florida, to media channels in New York, and to the office of Senator Tom Daschle in Washington. It was the same in the Canadian parliament where employees had to be sanitized. At the time, neither the Department of Public Safety nor the equivalent of the Epidemic Intelligence Service of the CDC existed. Now they did, but the RCMP still had the leading role in investigating and thwarting potential attacks.
At the first meeting, where the participants learned the alarming facts with wide eyes, Willis declared, “Canadian scientists at the Suffield Defense Research Center and the Ottawa Emergency Department were the first to assess the danger posed by the mailing of anthrax. They then communicated their findings to the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg and
to the CDC in Atlanta.”
Willis, glaring with outrage and brandishing an opened envelope, uttered a sinister warning, “We realized that contamination by mail is frighteningly effective. Although the envelope may still be sealed, because it is not airtight, the poison begins to spread. Deadly doses would already be on the desk, paper, files and pencils. You wouldn't even need to have been in contact with the envelope to become infected.”
Kristen Vale, a policewoman in her late 20s, remembered a briefing given by the FBI on anthrax.

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is Ray Phillips, one of our neighbors to the south. He worked on the investigation codenamed ‘Amerithrax.’”
“Ok, let's start with the symptoms: you literally boil in your own body, which becomes like a pressure cooker at forty degrees,” said the special agent responsible for Canada-US cooperation, all too happy to speak out.
“Then, ulcers disfigure your face.”
“Why anthrax rather than another weapon?” asked the young woman.
“Good question. Anthrax is the most practical biological weapon for a terrorist. The bacilli are not dangerous to handle because, in the absence of water, it turns into inert spores. But watch out; it becomes lethal upon contact with secretions from the human body: blood, saliva, tears, mucus from the nasal cavities and respiratory system, etc., since they all contain some moisture.”
He concluded with the prediction of more attacks to come. “With anthrax, we have terrorism that requires little effort, and is therefore attractive. It is called ‘high/low terrorism,’ which is to say, a very high number of casualties at a very low cost.”
In this climate of paranoia brought on by the terrorists, no suspicious behavior was overlooked. Rodger Suther seemed to be a risk for two reasons. He had uttered death threats in public against many of the heads of the government’s administration. And, he had worked in the past at a disposal site for anthrax-infected cattle carcasses, somewhere in the United States. The most virulent strain, no less: Vollum.

After having sipped a coffee, which served as his breakfast, and having smoked a cigarette on the doorstep with a half-dozen other office workers, the phony janitor, Rodger Suther, had resumed his duties half heartedly. He polished the paneling of the central elevator, and then began emptying the trash from the Heritage Department offices on the third floor, exchanging lewd jokes with the employees.
"He's incredibly sure of himself," Vale said, "which suggests to me that he's not planning an attack today. If ever there will be one.”
Using the concealed microphone under her janitor uniform, Kristen Vale kept in constant contact with the head of Operations, Preston Willis. The boss was posted a few kilometers away, on the opposite bank of the Ottawa River, in a branch office of the RCMP in downtown Ottawa.
“Indeed, we may be doing all this for nothing”, admitted Willis. “But do you know what we always used to say in the special-forces unit of the Second Joint Task Force in Bosnia, Agent Vale? There are always two truths: the apparent truth and the real truth…the ground truth.”
"Preston Willis and his endless sayings," Vale thought.
Kristen Vale's mockery of Preston Willis and his obsession with quotations was not mean-spirited, however. She liked Preston, her secret services mentor.

Suther had now stopped in front of the photocopier in a third-floor service room. Kristen Vale saw him through the glass enclosing the office equipment to stifle the noise.
“What? He is going to make photocopies? That’s new!”
To her amazement, she saw him lift the module housing and remove the dry ink cartridge. Without even checking to see if he was being watched, he pulled another cartridge out of his work cart and installed it.
"It's not the janitor’s job to do that," Vale observed. “It's not normal!”
By the time she had walked around the room to an entrance as far away as possible from Suther, Kristen Vale found the place deserted.
“He left, except that there is something really strange...”
“What?”
“The Xerox is on. Suther ordered thirty copies, but there was no document to photocopy!”
“And, if he had wanted to test the new cartridge, he would have remained there, right?” added Willis.
This anomaly triggered a feeling of apprehension in both the agent and her boss.
“Unplug the Xerox and stick an "Out of Order" sign on it,” Willis ordered. “I'm afraid our man has set a boobytrap.”

Une lectrice vient de trouver LE SECRET DE DIEU chez le Tigre géant de Laval, une autre dans un stand de journaux de la Place Jacques-Cartier à Longueuil.
Un lecteur avec qui j'ai eu le plaisir de jaser au Salon du livre de Montréal m'a dit avoir dévoré les deux tomes alors qu'il était en vacances au Saguenay-lac Saint-Jean.
Mes amis lecteurs aiment me rapporter où ils se sont procuré les tomes du Secret de Dieu.
Une lectrice de Gatineau qui m'a fait le plaisir de me visiter au Salon du livre de Montréal m'a confié avoir acheté les deux tomes du SECRET DE DIEU à une succursale de la pharmacie Jean Coutu.
Une amie a déniché les deux tomes du SECRET DE DIEU à la Librairie Vénus à Rimouski, un autre lecteur a acheté les deux tomes au Canadian Tire à Buckingham (Gatineau) en allant acheter un BBQ!!!
Quelqu'un les aurait-il vus dans un kiosque à journaux de l'Aéroport international Pierre-Elliot-Trudeau?
Quelqu'un a-t-il commencé à lire le premier tome, Le message des Templiers, sur la plage de Cancun?

Je viens de découvrir le roman "Le secret de Dieu", Tome I, c'est un super thriller. J'aime bien les mystères en relation au monde ésotérique.

Excellent thriller qu'est "Le secret de Dieu". J'ai lu les deux tomes presque d'un trait. La signature avec la double-hélices fut sans doute le clou du livre!
